Background

Built for production and research

The farm was designed from the outset to serve two purposes at once: commercial production and research. Alongside growing crops, it hosted several R&D projects, each carried out inside a working farm rather than a laboratory. Optimal lighting solutions and their influence on crop yield were tested in side-by-side trials. Solutions for lowering electricity consumption were measured against real production data. Image recognition was used to predict crop yield from growth recorded over time.

Since then, our investments and priorities have shifted towards AI and other solutions. The farm is no longer part of our core work, which is why it is for sale.

Where it is useful, we are also glad to share some of our findings and experience informally with a buyer who is interested. The legal owner of the farm is SIA ODZ, and the sale is made on its behalf.

Method

How NFT hydroponics works

NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) grows plants without soil. A very shallow stream of nutrient water flows past the roots: they take water and nutrients from the film and oxygen from the air above it.

  1. 01

    Nursery

Seeds germinate under their own light schedule.

  2. 02

    Growing frames

Young plants move to frames stacked six tiers high.

  3. 03

    Nutrient film

Solution flows down slightly sloped channels and returns to the tank.

  4. 04

    Light & climate

LEDs replace the sun; HVAC keeps temperature and air stable.

  5. 05

    Control

A PLC runs light, pumps, dosing, airflow and alarms automatically.

System B

LED lighting

The farm is ideal for light-recipe, photoperiod and cultivar research.

  • 96 W slim LED tubes
  • Separate light schedules for nursery and growing area
  • 3 spare LED panels included

In one trial, four different lights — state-of-the-art industry lighting and the farm's own light recipes — were compared against crop yield under otherwise similar conditions.

In another, cameras were used to capture growth deviation patterns: the same view of each crop recorded at set times, so differences in growth could be followed over the whole cycle.

System C

Automatic control (PLC)

A PLC is an industrial control computer. It runs light timing, LEDs, airflow, HVAC, pumps, valves, nutrient dosing and alarms. You receive the full configuration, program, passwords and settings. No cloud subscription needed.
